Men 2.0 Presentation at the Community Campus, May 29th The Advocates, in association with the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence will be presenting a program for community members interested in helping the children of Idaho grow in to strong and healthy adults. The program will be presented in the Minnie Moore Room at The Community Campus in Hailey on Tuesday, May 29th at 6:30 pm. The focus of the program will be on "teachable moments", where adults have unique opportunities to present a child with information. "These teachable moments can happen while watching ads during the Superbowl or while sitting in the gondola on Baldy" says The Advocates Engaging Men and Boys Project Coordinator, Travis Jones. "They are unique opportunities to teach our kids about right and wrong, and to help instill a sense of respect toward others". For more information on this presentation or about the Engaging Men and Boys Program, please contact Travis Jones, (208) 788-4191 or travis@theadvocatesorg.org. About The Advocates...
Saturday May 19th was an amazing day for over 60 Girls on the Run participants! They along with 200 community members who joined the run/walk as running buddies and general race participants, completed the 9th annual Girls on the Run Community 5k Fun Run/Walk that supports the Girls on the Run program. Under sunny skies and warming temps, the community hit the course the winds its way through the Della View neighborhood, ending at the park for a family friendly Healthy Living Expo. For the first time this year we had two corporate teams enter, Wood River Insurance and Sun Valley Company. WRI showed their spirit by dressing in yellow socks and paint on their bodies stating "Bring Bowe Home". Sun Valley Company's team dawned tutus, feather boas and wings. The teams need your votes to be awarded the "spirit award" and the prize of each winning Garmin GPS watches. Visit our facebook fan page to place your vote by no later than noon on Friday, May 25th. The SVO Pet of the Week is Huey. Huey has already been passed around from home to home, and now he has now found himself at our Shelter. While we are sure his previous owners were well-intentioned, an English Pointer does need lots of exercise, and Huey is happiest being with people, not being left kenneled for long periods of time. Huey is high energy. He will require daily off leash hikes. With his muscular build and athletic frame, this handsome dog should make an excellent hiking, running, biking, and skiing buddy. Huey is very affectionate and enjoys attention. He can be a bit shy in new situations, but, as long as someone is there to guide him, he recovers quickly and becomes quite social. We recommend that his adopter read up on his breed, or have experience with hunting dogs. This guy is should make someone very happy, and we've promised him that his days of being passed around are over. We're going to find him a true forever home! Huey is a medium size neutered male English Pointer (purebred)...

The SustainBlaine Advisory Group approved a slate of 3 to serve on the SustainBlaine formal Board of Directors. Two of the Board positions are new and one is a replacement for George Kirk whose term expired. A nominating committee comprised of several Advisory Group members interviewed five highly qualified candidates. Carter Ramsay, chair of SustainBlaine Advisory Group, emphasized the challenge in narrowing the proposed slate, stating: “We are fortunate and grateful to have such exceptional people desiring to serve on the Board. The slate proposed by the committee brings additional skills and expertise.” The three new Board members include Wally Huffman, Dan Olmstead and Dave Theobald. Huffman served as the General Manager of Sun Valley Resort from 1977 until 2009 when he was appointed Director of Resorts and Resort Development for Sun Valley and Snowbasin. Harry Griffith, SustainBlaine Executive Director commented, “His extensive background in development and planning along with...
The SVO Pet of the Week is Daisy. Daisy is everything a Pit Bull should be: social, friendly, great with dogs, and all lean muscle. She loves to go for hikes and is very well mannered off leash. Daisy meets everyone with a wagging tail, and, more often than not, a big slobbery kiss. She is young and will need training and an active home. She can be quite excitable if not given enough exercise, so we are recommending a home where she will gets daily hikes. Daisy is a quick study. She is learning her basic manners, but will need some more attention in this department. Daisy has lived with dogs and horses amicably before, but she is a bit annoying to cats, so we feel a cat free home would be best. Check out this adorable dog and see if she is the right one for you! Daisy is a medium size spayed female American Staffordshire terrier
born around 2009. For more information about Daisy or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of The Wood River Valley.
The SVO Pet of the Week is E.J. E.J. arrived at the Shelter as a stray, but his outgoing personality makes us believe he was once someone's pet. E.J. is a friendly cat, but he takes a little bit of time to become confident enough to let you see how great he really is. E.J. is friendly with other cats and doesn't seem too troubled by dogs. We are recommending a home without young children, because he may be overwhelmed by lots of activity. Come meet E.J., a great-looking cat with an equally great personality. E.J. is a neutered male Siamese mix born around March 2011. For more information about E.J. or any of the other wonderful pets at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351. New On-Site Food Distribution Addresses Stigma Associated With Asking For Help Beginning April 30th, The Hunger Coalition offers a new Food Bank Distribution focused on privacy. For local families and individuals struggling to make ends meet, but afraid to come forward for help, this is a welcome and necessary solution. While The Hunger Coalition is deeply proud of their volunteers, donors and staff for helping to provide hundreds of local families with fresh and non-perishable foods throughout the year, it remains clear that not everyone is actually receiving the help they need. According to a 2009 Feeding America study, over 3,000 Blaine County residents are considered “food insecure”, which means they do not always know where they will find their next meal. These are neighbors and acquaintances; they are children in our schools. Some miss a single meal every now and then while others go without food for several days. These are real issues facing people in our community. They are hungry and scared....

Breen contributes her work experience in domestic relations and immigration law to The Advocates in addition to previous involvement on boards. She strongly believes that domestic violence programs should provide life and job skills training to support abused people’s efforts to be successful members of our community. Brad Henson, Woodside Elementary School Principal,...
The SVO Pet of the Week is Minnie Mouse. Minnie Mouse has gotten lots of attention since she arrived here as a stray. With her adorable greying face, it is hard not to want to pamper her! Minnie is a very sweet older dog. We believe she is at least 10 years old, and therefore we feel a quieter, less active home would be most appropriate for her. She is fine with other dogs, but doesn't especially enjoy interacting with them. She appears to be in good health, and just had her teeth cleaned, so we think she may have quite a few more years in her! She enjoys short walks, but enjoys a warm bed to lay in even more. If you can open your heart and home to this senior girl she will be forever grateful. Minnie Mouse is a spayed female Australian Cattle Dog (purebred) born around December 2001. For more information on Minnie or any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter, pelase call 788-4351 or visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org . A similar event hosted by Panache in December resulted in a $2,153 donation to The Advocates and additional customer support provided holiday gifts for several shelter families. Skills for Success is an 11-week job and life skills training program that strives to increase the employability, job retention, and standard of living of The Advocates' clients. The Advocates started the program in November 2011, and thus far 15 people have graduated. Program graduates have found jobs and increased their wages due to participation. One participant stated that she discovered new and effective ways to describe her background and training and was able to advertise her skills to...

Monday - 40% off Tuesday - 50% off Wednesday - 60% off Thursday - 70% off Friday - 80% off Saturday - 9 to 11am - Bag Sale Spring Opening - Tuesday 17 April The SVO Pet of the Week is Cupid. Cupid arrived at the Shelter as a stray. It appeared that his family moved and left him in the apartment to fend for himself. Fortunately, the landlord found him and brought him to us, and this sweet kitty is now ready to find a real "forever" home. Not surprisingly, poor Cupid is a bit on the shy side. He takes some time to warm up, and he seems a little stressed by the hustle and bustle of the Shelter. We think he would do best in a quieter home where he could be the only pet, or live with other pets that are social and friendly. Cupid has all the makings of a lovely companion; he just needs someone willing to take a chance and give him the life he deserves. Cupid is a neutered male Domestic Shorthair born around February 2009. For more information on Cupid of any of the other wonderful pets awaiting adoption at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, please visit our website at www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.
