St. Luke’s YAK! is proud to introduce Brandeis Sample as the next Youth Outreach Specialist. St.Luke’s YAK! is a healthy youth initiative with a focus on building the Developmental Assets of youth through community service, education, and recreation. Brandeis joins Program Coordinator Dan VandenHeuvel as the St. Luke’s YAK! program wraps up a successful school year, featuring strong participation in its Blaine County Teen Advisory Council (BCTAC) and BCTAC II programs for middle and high school students. In total, BCTAC members completed over 1800 hours of community service this year. St. Luke’s YAK! also offered health and life skills panel discussions at area high schools, as well as several middle school afterschool programs and the Diversity Dramatist Troupe.

St. Luke’s YAK! partners with numerous community organizations to provide activities and service opportunities for youth throughout the year. In June, twelve BCTAC students will be attending the Idaho Youth Summit in Coeur d’Alene, ID. In addition, YAK! will offer weekly volunteer opportunities, outdoor fun, service trips, camping, YMCA nights, and more. All middle and high school youth are welcome to participate in YAK!, and most of our events are offered at minimal cost thanks to the generous support of St. Luke’s and our community partners. YAK! is also the Youth Involvement Chair for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on July 22.

For more information, please contact Dan VandenHeuvel at 208-727-8735 or vandend@slhs.org. YAK! can be found online at www.stlukesonline.org/YAK.

The new Blaine County Affiliate for Habitat for Humanity is currently seeking interested and qualified families for a unique and exciting opportunity to own an affordable home in Blaine County.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization dedicated to building simple, decent and affordable housing in partnership with people in need.  Since 1976, Habitat has built over 300,000 homes worldwide.  Houses are possible through donations of time, labor, materials, and funding. Selected families must meet certain financial guidelines and are required to complete specified “sweat equity” hours and projects toward the completion of their home.

Each Habitat affiliate is independent and locally run.  The Blaine County affiliate became official in April 2010 and hopes to soon find a family or families to partner on a new building project.

Information about the application process is available at the YMCA, St. Luke’s Center for Community Health, The Community Library, the Hailey Public Library and the Bellevue Library. For a list of additional sites where applications and information may be obtained, please call Erin Buell at St. Luke’s Center for Community Health, 727-8737.
